Recap of SYNC sustainability workshop: Climate Change impact on Public Health

🎉 January 2025 we hosted the first of the SYNC sustainability community workshop which we had an oversubscription of attendees.
We had close to 40 turn-ups which makes it one of our largest workshop yet on climate science education, with the Climate Fresk card-based learning methodology.

Our largest climate education workshop to date!
The topic we chose to kick off the workshop series was on the impact of Climate Change on Public Health, which is led by Natasha Lye & Thibaut Meurgue-Guyard.
We had the privilege of inviting Dr Sandeep Sahany to share the core findings from the V3 National Climate Change Study, which is a joint research of multiple governmental agencies such as National Environment Agency & Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore.
🌡️ The topic and keynote sharing by Dr Sandeep Sahany was a timely sharing as 2024 was our warmest year on record, on par with 2019 & 2016. July’24 was our warmest month with a mean temperature of 29.3°C

Singapore’s daily max temperature prediction towards 2100 based on the 4 different
Shared Socio-Economic Pathway scenarios.
⚠️ Singapore’s Climate Change Projections by end of Century TLDR:
☀️Daily mean temperature can be as high as 27.1°C to 30.9°C. The current daily mean is 26.6°C.
☀️We’ll have between 41 to 351 days of daily maximum temperature exceeding 35°C.
☂️ The monsoon wet season (like the one we just had) is going to exceed the last historical high in 2006. If you recall, Dec '06 was our highest monthly rainfall of 765.9mm (~25mm per square meter per day, which is about the size of 7,356 Olympic swimming pools!)
☀️Dry spells are going to last longer & drier. Dry spells are at least 15 consecutive days of less than 1mm of rainfall. Just in July last year, we had already experienced 18 consecutive days of hot days without rain.
In summary, we’ll have hotter days, more extreme rainfalls & longer periods without rain. We won’t be able to enjoy our outdoor activities as much, people will be spending more time indoors shielding from the sun or the rain & we’ll be more vulnerable to heat-stress related health risks.
🧑🔧Transmuting all of that into present-day action - the best time to start is now, to reduce, reuse & repair.
We can all begin by becoming more conscious of what we buy & produce.
There’s no change or action that’s too small, as your efforts will compound over time and our great-great grandkids will thank us for it.
